The Redwood Rollers
In recent years, a contact sport known as Roller Derby has been experiencing a resurgence. Here in Humboldt County, the Redwood Rollers are competing in their Second season. In the 20th century, Roller Derby was a mixed gender sport, but today’s Redwood Rollers are an all female outfit.
The game is played on an oval-shaped race track where skaters try to lap the other team for points. The Jammer, who is identified by a marker on her helmet known as “the panties”, tries to pass the other teams blockers. The blockers, as the name implies, are there to stop the jammer by any means necessary. Every time the jammer passes a blocker, she earns a point for her team — and that’s how the game is won.
Saturday, August 15th, the Redwood Rollers hosted an away-team from Oregon known as the Emerald City Roller Girls.
